Turnitin Plagiarism Detection Software Available in Canvas
Turnitin plagiarism software is available as a Canvas integration now. Turnitin scans documents you suspect may contain plagiarized materials and scans them against a set database. It then gives documents a “similarity rating” as a percentage, which means that percentage of the text matches other sources. The matches are highlighted and color-coded by source and the list of sources matched is found at the end of the report.
Turnitin is not perfect and the reports need to be carefully examined, even in the case of high percentage matches. The database is limited: it does not contain subscription content unless it is also available on the open web, and therefore does not contain many legal materials. Machine-based plagiarism detection also does not recognize context. Therefore, matches in these types of reports frequently result from commonly used jargon, headings, properly quoted text, or even citations themselves. If you decide to use Turnitin, please review the substance of the report carefully and do not use the percentage rating as a proxy for determining whether or not actual plagiarism has been committed.
If you require assistance interpreting this report, please contact Michelle Wu, who has experience in assessing whether or not a particular passage rises to the level of plagiarism.
To create an assignment that will scan for possible plagiarism, follow these instructions from the Canvas team at UIS.
If you need support, please contact the Georgetown Canvas support team.
