Innovative Policing Program

How can we ensure that policing reduces insecurity and injustice in an inclusive manner, instead of reinforcing inequality? How can communities and police departments work together to address the toxic legacy of racial discrimination that continues to distort law and policy in the United States?

The Innovative Policing Program brings together many of the nation’s top experts on criminal justice and policing. In June 2017, Georgetown Law faculty affiliated with the Innovative Policing Program launched the Police for Tomorrow Fellowship Program, a joint project with Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Through the Police for Tomorrow Fellowship, new D.C. police officers and civilian police department personnel will participate in a series of structured workshops designed and facilitated by Georgetown Law faculty, focusing on issues such as police use of force, race and criminal justice, implicit bias, over-criminalization and mass incarceration, youth development and the impact of trauma and policing in marginalized communities.

In addition to these workshops, Police for Tomorrow Fellows will participate in community engagement activities in Washington DC, and will ultimately select and pursue capstone projects designed to benefit DC communities.
