Marilyn Tucker was Director of the Office of Career Strategy at Georgetown University Law Center for many years, and then created the position and assumed the role of Director of Alumni Career Services. In this position Marilyn counsels alumni whose experience spans the gamut — from those who have practiced law for a year or two to those with forty or more years of experience. These alumni, located throughout the United States and abroad, are changing jobs, considering other career fields, moving to different geographic regions, and generally in the midst of a career transition. Recently, Marilyn has been counseling alumni regarding retirement issues, and how they might consider creating new challenges for themselves.

In addition, Marilyn is Director of the Georgetown International Internship, a program which she created 25 years ago. The International Internship Program provides summer legal opportunities for Georgetown law students to work in foreign law firms, corporate legal departments and NGOs located all over the world. Summer 2018 was the 24th summer for Georgetown students to intern abroad through their program. Over 1400 students have had one of there internships.

Prior to assuming the role of Director of Alumni Career Services, Marilyn counseled law students – – and created “World of Choices: Forum on Careers in the Law” which has been a staple of the Career Strategy Office for the last 32 years.

Moreover, Marilyn is very involved in the annual Women’s Forum. This May’s 25th Women’s Forum was an enormous success with Georgetown women from all campuses involved – – not just Georgetown law alumni.

Even prior to her work at Georgetown Law Center, Marilyn has been interested in the subject of retirement. She decided to bring that passion together with her knowledge and understanding of lawyers and legal careers.  In fall 2017 Thomson Reuters published her book entitled,  Success Tips for Lawyers Leaving Practice: Rewire, Refire – Do Not Retire. Additionally, Marilyn has been hosting panel presentations on the subject of “Finding Fulfillment in Retirement.”

In August of 1998, the ABA Law Practice Management Section’s Distinguished Writers award was given to Marilyn for her article entitled, “Will Women Lawyers Ever Be Happy?” Also, in collaboration with a law placement colleague, Marilyn Tucker won the 1994 NALP “Mark of Distinction” Award for a review of available research into the career paths of women lawyers for the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession.

Earlier in her tenure at Georgetown, Marilyn wrote several chapters for ABA publications – – and in collaboration with another colleague, Marilyn edited and compiled Perspectives on Career Services, a NALP manual for new placement directors. Marilyn has a long time interest in career paths – – and, as a result, again along with a colleague, she designed and carried out a research study of law graduates from the Class of 1983 published in 1990 by The Georgetown Law Journal.

In her spare time, aside from having been on the Board of the Alzheimer’s Association of the National Capital Area, Marilyn and her husband are avid collectors. Just ask her, and she will talk endlessly about their collections especially the extensive antique tin collection.
