Pregnancy
Georgetown University is committed to creating an accessible and inclusive environment for pregnant and parenting students. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities including academic, educational, extracurricular, athletic, and other programs or activities of schools. This prohibition includes discrimination against pregnant and parenting students. Students may request adjustments based on general pregnancy needs or accommodations based on a pregnancy -related complication.
PREGNANCY ADJUSTMENTS and ACCOMMODATIONS
Students seeking an adjustment to a curricular or cocurricular program or services as the result of pregnancy or childbirth should complete a Pregnancy Adjustment Request Form, noting the requested reasonable adjustment. Each adjustment request is addressed on a case-by-case basis and will depend on medical need and academic requirements. Some examples of adjustments include a larger desk, breaks during class, permitting temporary access to elevators, rescheduling tests or exams, excusing absences for a short period, submitting work after a missed deadline, and providing alternatives to make up missed work. Please contact Maura DeMouy, Director of Academic Success and Deputy Title IX Coordinator, by email to submit the form and request an adjustment. The Deputy Title IX Coordinator will discuss the request with the pregnant or parenting student and may ask for documentation that supports the requested adjustments.
DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS FOR PREGNANCY-RELATED COMPLICATIONS
In certain situations, a pregnancy-related complication may be protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) entitling the student to a reasonable accommodation. Please contact the Office of Disability Services by email or by phone at 202-662-4042 to request an accommodation. The Director or Assistant Director of Disability Services will discuss the request with the pregnant or parenting student and will ask for documentation that supports the requested accommodations.
LACTATION ROOM
The Georgetown University Law Center campus has a lactation room located on the lower level of the Bernard S. & Sarah M. Gewirz Student Center. To access the room, nursing mothers with a valid GUID should go to the Office of Residence Life, located on the main floor of the Gewirz Center, and ask for the exact location of the Lactation Room and a door code for entering the room. Please contact the Deputy Title IX Coordinator with any questions or concerns about the facility.
